The F-Word: Furnishings

Ikea Is Bad For Couples

In a surprise to absolutely no one, Ikea, the furniture company that jokingly refers to certain products as “husband killers,” is bad for relationships. According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, relationship experts say that a trip to Ikea will lead to an argument. And, obviously, assembling Ikea furniture generally ensures a blow up. As soon as you walk into Ikea, “The store literally becomes a map of a relationship nightmare,” said clinical psychologist and professor Dr. Ramani Durvasula in the Wall Street Journal. That’s because underlying relationship issues bubble to the surface as couples attempt to choose furniture. “I’ve had couples go to the mat over a couch that neither of them even liked,” said marriage counselor and radio host Dr. Jane Greer to the WSJ. “Underneath, every discussion is really about how important am I to you?”

U.S.’s Most Beautiful Neighborhood

A lot of what makes a neighborhood noteworthy has to do with the people who live there — be they tons of hipsters, yuppies or the sexiest people on Earth. But, as much as these interesting citizens influence their environments, some parts of town stand on their own as more aesthetically pleasing, more architecturally interesting and more drop-dead-gorgeous than the rest of the city. To that end, we’ve combed our great nation from coast to coast and ranked 10 ‘hoods whose curbside appeal is undeniable. From East Coast historic districts to West Coast sea cliffs, these are the most beautiful neighborhoods in America.

Clean Your Sheets Correctly

Doing laundry seems like a no-brainer until your white jeans come out yellow and your all-purpose detergent doesn’t exactly live up to its name. But it isn’t only your clothing that’s susceptible to some common laundry mistakes. Your bed linens are, too, at least according to Missy Tannen, president of luxury linen company Boll & Branch. Tannen talked to The Huffington Post about the most common pitfalls to avoid when washing your sheets. Here are the five offenders below.

A $30,000 Doghouse

While most people are trying to earn a decent living, save money and pay rent, others are off spoiling their pets with crazy perks. From luxury pet hotels in Paris to pet massages and royal portraits, we thought we’d seen it all — until Samsung debuted this $30,000 “Dream Doghouse,” one of the most extreme dog houses we’ve ever seen. Tasked with building “the dog kennel of the future,” for Crufts 2015, the world’s largest dog show, the Samsung UK team went above and beyond. The doghouse comes with a treadmill, hydro-pool, automated feeder and even designer wallpaper — making us humans pretty doggone jealous.

The $200 Bathroom Makeover

Bathroom makeovers can be daunting. There’s the plumbing you probably want to leave to a pro, that overhead lighting you’ll likely have to rewire, and the tile — back away from the tile. Granted, that may not leave much in the way of transformation, but sometimes a mini makeover is all you need to create your new favorite room in your house. Here’s proof.

5 Essential Home Tools

When it comes to home improvement, we know the drill (see what we did there?): Get a good hammer, invest in a screwdriver, make sure you have pliers, and so forth. But even with a stocked toolbox, an easy weekend revamp can quickly turn into a sawdust-covered mess. Unless, you make sure you’re prepared for anything by adding a few extra tools into the mix. You probably never knew you needed the five tools we rounded up here (and that’s probably because you never even heard of them), but they can MAJORLY rev up your DIY game. These tools are useful for all sorts of projects, from painting the front door to building your own table — and once you start using them, you’ll wonder how you ever worked without them.
