I’m too dumb to appreciate “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” so I can’t say it was my favorite nominated film of the night. But I did give a big cheer when Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress. That category has been so stubbornly Caucasian that Yeoh’s triumph was not only personal but one for the history books. My ownl favorite among her competition was Cate Blanchett, who in “Tar” gave one of those comprehensive performances that don’t win Oscars but remain in the memories of filmgoers longer than the performance that won. Another such performance was given by Angela Bassett as Tina Turner years ago in “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” I was hoping Bassett would finally earn her statuette last night but it was not to be. Jamie Lee Curtis is also a beloved veteran and was swept along by the “Everywhere” tide. The most impressive statistic of “Everything”‘s sweep: With its triumphs for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor, as well as Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing, “AKA” won more above-the-line Oscars than any movie in the show’s 95-year history. Well done!
