Oscars For Me: Ariana Not Will

I’ve always thought Will Smith was a phony, so his act of physical violence against Chris Rock didn”t surprise me in the least. Ironically, it was the only major unscripted moment of the evening: the winners were predictable (LemonWade’s Oscar expert, Rex Okpodu, got 21 out of 23 predictions: yay, Rex!). Neither of the big winners, “CODA” and “Dune,” had best director nominations. But I’m going to focus on Ariana DeBose, who won best supporting actress for her tremendous Anita in “West Side Story.” Most news reports emphasize that she is the first openly queer woman of color to win any Oscar. Let’s not minimize her achievement. She is also the first openly LGBT person to win an acting Oscar. Glorious.
