I’m Very Happy About Some Of The Winners But The Oscars Were Basically A Big Bore

The good news: Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”), winner for best supporting actress, was the first Korean actor to ever win an Oscar, and only the second Asian woman. Chloé Zhao was the second woman ever to win best director, and the first woman of color. The terrible news: Best Actress is still the almost exclusive province of white people, a fact made worse by the win last night of Frances McDormand, who already had two in the category. Even worse: without many clips and with no live performances, the broadcast was painfully dull. This year’s Grammys had an intimate space and were terrific. The Oscars had an intimate space and failed to use it creatively. Finally, let me note that LW’s Oscars expert, Rex Okpodu, did very well at predicting: 18 out of 23. Congrats (and happy birthday), Rex!
