Oscar Noms: Quick Thoughts

They were announced this morning by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. Mank got the most noms but probably won’t win any major awards. Nomadland did well and seems headed for best picture. Nomadland’s director, Chloe Zhao, scored several noms and will probably be the second woman to win Best Director. Hooray! “Judah” did really well in noms and one of its actors, Daniel Kaluuyah, will probably win best supporting actor. And Glenn Close got her 8th Oscar nom, this time in supporting actress. Maybe she should take a page from the Katharine Hepburn/Maggie Smith playbook: stay home from the awards ceremony and increase her chances to win. Finally: Aaron Sorkin, the helmer/screenwriter of “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” was snubbed in best directing, which probably kills that movie’s chances of beating “Nomadland” for Best Picture. LW’s Rex Okpodu predicted the Sorkin snub. Well-done, Rex!
