It’s nutty even to consider having the Tony awards this year, given that Broadway is closed for the foreseeable future. The awards not only honor individual talent; they boost Broadway, and when there are no tickets to sell, what’s the point of having the ceremony? It’s important to remind people that Broadway will be back at some point, but that goal can be accomplished without awards. And why have awards when there has only been half a season in terms of the number of shows opened? More discussion here.
