Kobe Getting Special Oscar Tribute: Why?

I understand the sentimental reasons for giving Kobe Bryant a separate tribute (separate from the In Memoriam collage) at the Oscars on February 9th. But the fact is that many major movie stars — icons! — were not given separate tributes at the Academy Awards and giving one to Kobe, who won an Oscar for a short film, is just pandering. All those tributes to Kobe at the Grammys didn’t prevent the show’s ratings from tanking.
