Your Weekend: A Selective Guide
Movies: I know I’m in the minority but the film I want to see this weekend is not “Avengers” but “The Black Crow,” about Nureyev’s defection to the West. Streaming/TV: I’ve made a stab at watching PBS’s “Les Miserables,” but it is too self-consciously pleasure-denying, as if the adaptors said: “The musical version was too much fun and we aren’t having that!” Music: What’s with all of Springsteen’s cryptic Twitter messages? Adjust your meds, Bruce…In the past week, I’ve listened to at least a dozen versions of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” Love that song. Books: The best-seller list is the usual dreck, so I’ve been re-reading Barbara Tuchman’s “The Guns of August,” which has one of the most splendid opening chapters ever. Sports: My 76ers are advancing in the NBA playoffs, so all is right with the world. (Almost.) Finally: My dog refuses to hump male dogs: should I be worried?
