Art Projects Are Hurtled Into Space

Two art projects hurtled into space yesterday aboard a Falcon 9 rocket launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. If all goes well, they will settle into orbits around the Earth as part of a payload of 64 new satellites from 17 countries carried by the rocket. The rocket, launched by the spacecraft manufacturer SpaceX, lifted off at 10:34 a.m. local time. Previously scheduled launchings on Nov. 19 and Nov. 28 were delayed for additional pre-flight inspections and because of high winds. Eagerly watching the launching on a live stream from SpaceX were staff members at the Nevada Museum of Art, which is sponsoring one of the art projects, Orbital Reflector, created by the American-born artist Trevor Paglen.
