Do We Really Need Another “Little Women”?
A friend of mine finds the 1933 “Little Women” movie, directed by George Cukor and starring Katharine Hepburn, to be the perfect emetic. I like it. I liked the subsequent Hollywood versions (1949, 1994) rather less but still found things in them to cherish. I have not seen the recent PBS version or the recent BBC version. And now Greta Gerwig, whose “Lady Bird” was one of the most acclaimed movies of 2017, has announced yet another version. It will star some of my favorite actors old (Meryl Streep) and young (Saoirse Ronan, Timothee Frenchipoo) and yet all I can think is: we really really don’t need another adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel right now. Stop the madness!
