Harper Lee & Mark Twain Dropped

A school district in Minnesota has pulled To Kill a Mockingbird and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from its curriculum, arguing that the classic novels’ use of racial slurs risked students being “humiliated or marginalized.” The district says that other texts teach the same lessons without “hurtful” language. Oh, so students are supposed to be “protected” from the “N word,” because, you know, they never hear it in the rap music they listen to or out on the street? History is brutal but some progress, slowly, is made. Why shield students from the full force of that lesson?
