Oscar Noms: What You Need To Know

Noms were announced this morning. As expected, “The Shape of Water” led with 13 dings (13? is that a curse?). I had hoped that either Armie Hammer or Michael Stuhlbarg would be supporting-actor-nommed for “Call Me By Your Name” but am not surprised that they weren’t. No McDonaugh for best director: a surprise. Denzel’s nom for a lousy movie, “Roman Israel, Esq.,” means that he has achieved Streep status: he’s nommed regardless. Once again, there were no non-white or non-African-American people nommed in acting categories. How about a new hashtag: #oscarssoblackandwhite. And they are black-and-white — i.e. obvious — in another way: we already know who the acting winners will be on March 4th: Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand (pictured), Sam Rockwell, and Allison Janney.
