Your Weekend: A Selective Guide
Movies: If you’ve already seen “Star Wars,” why not try out some smaller fare: Aaron Sorkin’s “Molly Game” or the well-reviewed German film “In The Fade.” TV/Streaming: I’m thrilled that, starting New Year’s Day, Netflix will have all three “Godfather” movies. As for New Year’s Eve, Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen will be doing their sister act on CNN and Mariah Carey will brave the frigid temps trying not to repeat last year’s Times Square fiasco. Music: Tony Tommasini says the Callas “Tosca” is the finest opera recording ever made and it’s hard to disagree. It’s also hard to disagree with Bono that pop music has gotten very girly. Books: I missed Robert Dallek’s new political life of FDR when it was released in early November: I plan to remedy this neglect soon. Sports: One of my alma maters, Iowa, won its bowl game at Yankee Stadium. My almost-alma mater, Stanford, blew it in their bowl…My new favorite Premiere League player is Raheem Sterling, of Manchester City. Finally: You don’t have to make New Year’s resolutions to begin 2018 with resolve. Wishing you all the best: hats and horns!
