Cher Wows Billboards, And Soon Broadway
Miley Cyrus cried and Drake broke a record, but it was Cher, who turned 71 on Satuday, who made everyone “Believe.” She owned last night’s Billboard Awards, which were held in Las Vegas, the town where Cher makes her big bucks. I have long said that I won’t die happy unless I can see Cher play Mame for one night, preferably on Broadway, but as long as Vegas pays her a lot more I’m not living in hope. But Broadway hasn’t forgotten Cher. A new musical about her is having a “developmental workshop” in October. The casting breakdown describes three main roles – Babe, Lady and Star – who “represent Cher at different moments of her life – starting as a teenager who falls for Sonny Bono (Babe), a successful music star navigating the challenges of the entertainment industry (Lady) and the lady we know today with a fascinating wealth of life experience, successes, and failures (Star).” I wonder about the title: “The Cher Show.” Won’t people expect the star herself to perform?
