Your Weekend: A Selective Guide
Movies: New releases worth seeing: “Toni Erdmann,” from Germany, may be Oscar’s next foreign-language winner; “Paterson” is Jim Jarmusch’s poetic ode to poetry; “20th Century Women” features a terrific, unglamorous performance from Annette Bening; and “Hidden Figures” tells the story of three African-American math whizzes who worked for NASA. TV/Streaming: “Sherlock” returns Sunday on PBS: Cumberbitches, rejoice! Music: Wash that Christmas music from your ears with some George Michael. Books: “The Princess Diarist” is Carrie Fisher’s behind-the-scenes look at the “Star Wars” shoot. Sports: The NFL playoff situation is more or less set, so I may take a break this weekend. Finally: 2016 has been an annus horribilis, but will it look better a year from now after 12 months of The Donald? Whatever 2017 brings, Happy New Year!
