Boy, it doesn’t take long for the media to start moralizing about the behavior of a celebrity who has just died. Today’s stories about George Michael are mostly about drug use and sex and depression: oh, boy, so few people get high or have sex or are depressed! Let’s stigmatize all those things some more! Meanwhile, two of his albums are back in the Top Ten on Amazon. And I’d rather focus on the stories that are emerging about George’s extraordinary generosity to individuals and to charities — much of which was conducted anonymously: a rarity in our endlessly self-promoting age.
