Your Weekend: A Selective Guide
Movies: Of the year-end releases, I recommend “Manchester,” “La La Land,” “Fences,” “Julieta,” “Patriot’s Day,” and “Silence.” TV/Streaming: “Medici” is Netflix’s latest historical drama…Friday brings “Shakespeare Live! From the RSC,” with Cumberbitch and David Tennant. Music: As an antidote to all the holiday religious music (yes, dears, any Christmas lyrics about “Jesus” are religious), I plan to crank up the rock ‘n’ roll: Slayer, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Sleater-Kinney. Books: If you’re missing “Downton Abbey,” pick up Adrian Tinniswood’s “The Long Weekend: Life in the English Country House, 1918-1939.” Sports: The NFL playoff picture is coming into view: yay to the Giants (maybe), Raiders, and Chiefs, and don’t underestimate the Steelers. Finally: Anytime anybody starts bitching to me about their life lately, I reply, “Count your blessings. You could be in Aleppo.”
