“Fences” Arrives: An Oscar For Viola!
“Fences” has been seen by the media, and they are excited. This August Wilson play has been directed for the screen by Denzel Washington, who also stars. There’s lots of buzz for his performance. But I’m much more excited that Viola Davis is now being heralded for an Oscar in Best Supporting Actress. I wish she were in the Best Actress category: after last year’s #oscarssowhite, it would be much more meaningful to have her win the bigger category, instead of the category into which black women seem to be shunted. But a dark-skinned woman on the Oscar podium is still awfully good news on a Monday.
