Why Brangelina Coverage Didn’t Bother Me

brad-and-angelinaTown scold Susan Sarandon called out CNN over its coverage of Pitt-Jolie divorce, which the network heralded on its website homepage in lieu of news about Terence Crutcher, a 40-year-old unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police officers after his vehicle broke down in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Monday. Plenty of people on my social-media feeds echoed Sarandon’s viewpoint. Why, they complained, can’t the media make stories about

police brutality and crazy Trump the lead topics every minute? Here’s why: America has been beaten down by the non-stop brutality toward people of color and by the lies of Donald Trump, who just told a crowd that “African-American communities are absolutely in the worst shape they’ve ever been in before. Ever, ever, ever.” Such outrageousness takes a toll on our collective psyche. Brad and Angie were Hollywood’s most glamorous couple, and they care about the planet in a way unknown to other celeb duos such as Kanye and Kim. I think we all deserve an occasional moment off from the current American madness, even if it’s via a sad story of a break-up. Brad and Angie are beautiful, and I certainly don’t mind seeing their faces at the top of the news for a minute.
