Director Jack Hofsiss Dies

jackdownloadI was very sad to hear about the death of Jack Hofsiss, best-known for directing “The Elephant Man” on Broadway when he was in his 20s. (He was the youngest person to win the Tony award for directing a play.) I first met Jack in a rehearsal room at the Williamstown Theater Festival, where he was directing “A Raisin in the Sun.” A 1985 accident on Fire Island meant that Jack spent most of his life in a wheelchair; during my interview, there was nothing to suggest his condition had slowed him down, although what happened behind the scenes for him (it took him at least two hours of preparation to get ready to leave the house) was extremely challenging. Jack was a unique, understanding spirit and I am grateful to have known him. R.I.P, Mr. Hofsiss!
