Who Should Play Angela Davis?
A biopic of prominent civil rights activist Angela Davis is in development. According to Variety, the as-yet-untitled project will be produced by Nina Yang Bongiovi, whose previous films include “Dope” and “Fruitvale Station.” Davis herself will exec-produce, while her Pulitzer prize-nominated niece, Elisa, will write the script. Davis was a leader of the US Communist party in the 1960s.The movie will concentrate on the 60s and 70s, so will likely leave aside Davis’s lesbianism, which she talked about publicly 30 years later. As for who should portray Angela, if they are sticking to the young Ms. Davis they will have to find a performer younger than the biggest African-American stars: Kerry Washington, Angela Bassett, etc. My choice: Jennifer Hudson.
