“Shuffle Along”: Ambitious, Derivative
Brian Seibert, who wrote a terrific book called “What the Eye Hears: A History of Tap Dancing,” has turned his gaze onto “Shuffle Along,” the new Broadway musical. He has very mixed views on the show’s dancing — and I agree. He says: ‘What it doesn’t do, though, is extend the choreographic development of “Jelly’s Last Jam†and “Bring in ’da Noise.†[Savion] Glover’s choreography for “Shuffle Along†is less ambitious and more derivative.
