Maybe She Can Replace Bette Midler
Not long ago, Sally Struthers did the national tour of “Hello, Dolly!” (I thought there was a law banning national tours of “Hello, Dolly!” as long as Carol Channing was alive.) Anyway, Sally was a hit: she wowed ’em in Sioux City. The local critic praised her “sly, subtle manner.” I had never thought of Dolly Levi as subtle but, hey, great roles accommodate new interpretations. Anyway, until my friend Dee Sushi decides to take up the part, I nominate Miss Struthers as the perfect replacement after Miss Midler is done with “Dolly” on Broadway. Until then, Sally is doing “Anything Goes” on Long Island.
