Reviews: “Genius” Isn’t Genius
“Genius” tells the story of novelist Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law) and his editor, Max Perkins (Colin Firth). The movie also stars Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce, and Dominic West. The reviews from the Berlin Film Festival, where “Genius” has just premiered, are weak-to-mediocre. Variety calls the movie “dull,’ and ‘dun-colored,’ and THR says the film treats ‘an interesting subject that remains impervious to dramatization.’ The American in me takes a bit of pleasure in the fact that a movie in which so many Americans are played by non-Americans is not a wow. What high-profile British director — the very accomplished Michael Grandage did “Genius” — would dare to cast a movie about Brits with tons of Americans?
