It shouldn’t be an ouch contest — I’m more oppressed than you are, etc. All the same, facts are facts. In 87 years of the Academy Awards, only 14 black men and women have won acting awards. Shameful. It’s much worse for openly LGBT people. “I have great sympathy for any group that feels under-represented in their industry,†said Ian McKellen to Sky News of the impact of the #OscarsSoWhite campaign Black people, who had been “ill-treated and under-estimated,†women, and LGBTs all had a legitimate reason to complain, said McKellen “I wonder if that is prejudice or chance,†McKellen said of the lack of any openly LGBT actor winning the Best Actor award — the unspoken inference was that it was the former.
