Movies: If you didn’t book a ticket to “Star Wars,” try the well-reviewed comedy “Sisters” or the tough-to-watch-yet-worth-it Holocaust story “Son of Saul.” Television: Catch up here with “The Great Holiday Baking Show.” On Sunday, Julian Fellowes uncovers the true stories behind life in some of Britain’s great historical houses. Music: I try to chase away the holiday blues by listening to authentic blues, which currently means Buddy Guy’s “Born To Play Guitar.” Books: I finally caught up with Ishiguro’s strange but memorable recent novel, “The Buried Giant.” I also recommend Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Sixth Extinction,” now in paperback: she argues that the end of civilization isn’t nigh — it’s now. Sports: I remain mesmerized by the graceful, stunning athleticism of Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. Finally: “The New Yorker secrets believes that people living anywhere else have to be, in some sense, kidding.” That’s John Updike, who mostly lived somewhere else.
