Your Weekend: A Selective Guide
Movies: “Bridge of Spies,” starring Tom Hanks, is slow to get started, but pretty good once it does. “Beasts of No Nation” stars Idris, so how bad could it be? (It’s also on Netflix.) And “Room” and “Truth” feature strong actresses: Brie Larson and Cate Blanchett. Television: PBS brings us Vanessa Williams in “Show Boat” on Friday, which I saw, and which is musically rich. People keep telling me to watch “Homeland” again. My response: Been there, done that. Music: Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap do the songs of Jerome Kern on “The Silver Lining.” In other news, I’m having a Judas Priest moment. Books: It won the Booker Prize after every big New York publisher turned it down: Marlon James’s novel “A Brief History of Seven Killings.” Sports: A Mets/Cubs series? Who’d a thunk it? Finally: At the supermarket the other day I counted five pumpkin-spice-flavored cereals.
