“Snow White” Goes P.C.: No More Dwarfs
Yes, we’re making progress: a black performer wins the best actress/drama Emmy and Otello at the Met Opera is no longer in blackface. Is it possible to go to far? A production of a favorite fairy tale in the UK has had its title changed to “Snow White and the Seven Friends.” Leicester De Montfort Hall Christmas pantomime of “Snow White” will use members of the show’s existing dance company. A spokesman for the show said that “dwarf is not a word that people feel comfortable with.†Well, the little people aren’t happy about that. One of them, actor Warwick Davis, retorted: “If you talk to any audience member after they’ve seen a show that doesn’t feature short actors in the seven dwarfs, they would tell you they’d rather see short actors playing these roles. ..It’s a shame that other people being offended on behalf of an actor might take work away from them.†I say: Send Tyrion Lannister — he just won an Emmy, too — and a few of his warrior back-ups to Britain to set things right.
