My Emmys Confession
Shhh: I didn’t watch the broadcast. I had intended to, but when I checked online early in the evening and noticed that shows which I found soporific (“Olive Kitteridge“) or unfunny (“Veep”) or no longer tolerable (“Game of Thrones”) were winning everything, I read a good book and took in the end of the NFL game. Watching the Emmy highlights this morning, I am struck by the contrast with this year’s Oscars: plenty of diversity, especially in the African-American actress winners. Regina King: yay! Uzo Aduba: yay yay! And Viola Davis: yay yay yay! (Even though I stopped watching Viola’s show — it’s one-and-a-half notes.) Viola is the first black person to win Best Actress/Drama.
