Burning Man: The Visual Highlights
It’s the annual festival of art, music and creeping corporatism, but there’s no denying that Burning Man has become best known for the months of effort that ‘burners’ put into their outlandish outfits. Part-Mad Max, part-Gay Pride psychedelia, with some sideshow craziness and techno ravers mixed in – there was no limit to the realization of his year’s theme, Carnival of Mirrors, among the estimated 70,000 that made the pilgrimage to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Some took the theme literally (bottom right), while others looked to the sun and sand of the desert for inspiration (left and center). The event dates back to 1986 and is based on principles of community, inclusion, creativity, and anti-consumerism (hah!), and the fashions of those in attendance both embody and reflect this.
