Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: “Walk in the Woods,” a new Redford movie, is the only release of any interest. Don’t worry, the quality autumn flicks will be out soon. Television: The U.S. Open is in full swing: perfect timing for an “American Masters” about Althea Gibson. I thoroughly enjoyed Julian Barnes’s novel “Arthur and George,” about Arthur Conan Doyle, so I expect to enjoy the screen adaptation this Sunday as well. Music: Chad Lawson has put a modern spin on a master with “The Chopin Variations.” When I tire of the classical lately I’ve been cranking up Iron Maiden’s “The Book of Souls.” Books: Yes, I’ve read the new Lisbeth Salander novel, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” and, yes, you should, too. Sports: College football opens this week, but the way the college programs exploit their players sickens me, so I probably won’t be watching. Finally: Do New York kids ever go back to school?
