Cate As Lucy? Not A Brilliant Idea
I revere Cate Blanchett, the only actress alive whose career has manage to out-Streep Meryl’s. (Meryl gives great screen performances; Blanchett gives great screen performances and performs the classics onstage and rules the red carpet.) But I confess I’m not excited about the idea of Blanchett playing Lucille Ball. Blanchett’s worst performances are her most mannered ones; I found excruciating her Katharine Hepburn in “The Aviator,” for which she won the Oscar. I don’t see how her Lucy will escape the excesses.
