Oops! The Girl In The Picture Is White

The New York Post reports: ‘Everybody seems to like the art for “Shuffle Along,” George C. Wolfe’s reworking of Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle’s 1921 revue. It features a vintage photo of jazz singer Adelaide Hall, who was in the original production. The photo was supplied — and authenticated — by the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts. But wait! Some musical theater scholars contacted the producers and said the woman in the ad is actually Ann Pennington, from another revue of the era, “George White’s Scandals.” One more thing: She’s white. Supposedly, the producers are investigating and will change the picture if it is in fact dear old Ann.
