The Late, Fabulously Great Hazel Scott
I always forget about Hazel Scott. Her contemporary Lena Horne is much better remembered, in part because Lena had a late-career Broadway hit show which cemented her reputation. But Hazel was arguably more talented — trained in the classics and instinctively at home in everything else. It’s not really fair to compare Hazel and Lena, of course, as Hazel played piano primarily and Lena sang. They were both real great.
