“Poirot” Star Is Now Lady Bracknell
Here’s the first photo of “Poirot” star David Suchet (pictured) as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. The actor said in a recent interview that he worries the part will ruin his career. Nonsense: In playing Algernon’s snobbish aunt in the classic comedy, Suchet follows in the footsteps of Geoffrey Rush and Brian Bedford, who both took on the role in 2011, and whose careers were hardly handbagged as a result. The new production, directed by Adrian Noble, will open at the Vaudeville Theatre in London on July 1st. Previews start tomorrow. In the meantime, revisit some of the actresses who have played the part — the best I saw onstage was Maggie Smith and the best on film is Edith Evans — with Margaret Rutherford, of course.
