Lost Songs From “My Fair Lady”
Songs cut from the original production of “My Fair Lady” are to be performed for the first time in almost 60 years. The numbers were removed from the Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe musical after the show’s first preview in February 1956 on Broadway, starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews (pictured). They were discovered, alongside a ballet penned for the musical, in boxes at the Library of Congress in the USA by University of Sheffield musicology lecturer Dominic McHugh in 2008. At the time, McHugh was researching his book, “Loverly: The Life and Times of My Fair Lady.” Now, with permission from the Lerner estate and the Frederick Loewe Foundation, the songs and ballet are to be performed as part of a concert at the University of Sheffield (U.K.), organized by McHugh. The songs that will be performed are “Lady Liza,” “Please Don’t Marry Me,” “Shy,” and “There’s a Thing Called Love.”
