“Wire” Creator Calls For Baltimore Calm
“The Wire” creator David Simon (pictured) has called for an end to looting and riots in Baltimore. Rioters took to the streets Monday after thousands mourned the death of Freddie Gray, an African-American man who died of an unexplained spinal injury while in police custody April 19. Gray’s funeral was held Monday. Simon, a former Baltimore-Sun reporter whose “The Wire” was set in the city, wrote on his website that there is plenty to be debated in the Gray case, but that “those “claiming the right to violence in Freddie Gray’s name” need to stop. “There was real power and potential in the peaceful protests that spoke in Mr. Gray’s name initially, and there was real unity at his homegoing today,” Simon wrote. “But this, now, in the streets, is an affront to that man’s memory and a diminution of the absolute moral lesson that underlies his unnecessary death.”
