Tony Nominations: Quick Reaction

I’ve got a a fuller analysis on the Financial Times website. (Full list of nominees here.) Just let me say how thrilled I am that the committee included Ken Watanabe from “The King and I” and gave “Disgraced” a Best Play nomination. Otherwise, the most-nommed shows were predictable: “American in Paris” and “Fun Home” both got 12. Alan Cumming and Kristen Chenoweth were announced as the hosts for the telecast on June 7. They are both well-liked but they don’t have the kind of celebrity pull that recent hosts Neil Patrick Harris and Hugh Jackman did. Also, Kristen is a nominee this year, and I don’t approve of asking nominees to host: it confers an unfair advantage.
