New Harper Lee: She’s A New Yorker

I love the fact that the title page of the original manuscript of her upcoming novel carries Miss Lee’s New York address: 1539 York Avenue. The book, with a July 14 release, has only been read by a handful of people. Featuring an adult Scout returning to Maycomb from New York to visit her father, and “grapp[ling] with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand both her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she spent her childhood,” according to its publishers, “Go Set a Watchman” was laid aside in the 1950s in favor of “To Kill a Mockingbird” when Lee’s editor persuaded her to write a novel from the perspective of the young Scout.
