John Waters: What To Wear Hitchhiking
John Waters, who is the most fun person on earth to interview (I’ve had the pleasure several times), has given yet another one, about his sense of fashion, to promote the paperback edition of his hitchhiking chronicle, “Carsick.” To wit: ‘When I hitchhiked, I wore an Issey Miyake jacket and Comme des Garçons pants, but moderate ones. I wanted to be comfortable, and, you know, that looks kind of like you’re poor. It’s not too smart to brag that you’re rich when you’re hitchhiking. That would be the stupidest thing in the world, because then people will rob you. Nobody ever gets held up for Comme des Garçons outfits.” In the photo, he’s wearing Paul Smith.
