New Sinatra Film: Loving But Limited
“Sinatra: All or Nothing At All,” the two-part documentary on HBO starting Sunday, is quite the loving valentine. The footage on the younger, pre-fat-Republican Frank is marvelous, and the footage of mid-career Sinatra singing like only he could sing is also superb. I just wish that Alex Gibney had been able to explore Sinatra’s dark side with the same rigor and honesty he brought to his recent Scientology film, “Going Clear.” But this was a family-approved effort, with all the good and bad that such an imprimatur brings.
