“Mrs. Doubtfire”: Another Drag Of A Musical?

There’s a “Tootsie” musical in the works. Now we learn that, for our sins, a musical is being made of “Mrs. Doubtfire,” the charming 1993 movie starring Robin Williams as a Scottish nanny. David Zippel and Alan Menken, a highly talented and highly accomplished lyricist and composer, are involved. And — you knew this was coming — Harvey Fierstein is writing the book. (Harvey played Williams’ brother in the movie; will he graduate to the title role in the musical?) I have to confess that, with each passing year, the appeal wanes for me of seeing plain-looking men dress up as women. But if the show is good then a Broadway audience might eat it up.
