“Selma” Director Refuses To Argue History
The historical hit squads have been busy lately attacking “Selma,” and, to a lesser extent, “The Imitation Game.” These movies are not documentaries, nor even acts of journalism. So my basic response to all the naysayers is: Get over yourself! At an event held this week for New York’s media elite, “Selma” director Ava DuVernay (center) responded to the criticism thus: “I’m not gonna argue history.” Journalist Gay Talese (left) defended DuVernay’s approach: “I was there. I saw it. She wasn’t there, but she got it.” Sitting patiently during this discussion was David Oyelowo (center) and Gayle King (right), best “friend” of Oprah Winfrey, who is one of the movie’s producers and performers and incessant defenders of DuVernay.
