Asano Joins Scorsese Picture
Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano (pictured) has signed on for a lead role in director Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” The film stars Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, and Adam Driver. Asano—whose credits include “Mongol,” “Thor,” and “47 Ronin”—is replacing Ken Watanabe, who will start rehearsals at the end of this month for “The King and I” at Lincoln Center Theater. Asano will play an interpreter who joins two Jesuit priests (Garfield and Driver) in pursuit of their mentor (Neeson) who traveled to 17th-century Japan on a Christian mission. Jay Cocks adapted Shusaku Endo’s novel for the screen.
