The Tumultuous Making Of A Classic
I didn’t even know Life magazine was still in existence, but it makes sense that a vintage publication would publish a special edition commemorating the 75th anniversary of “Gone with the Wind.” I wish the article had more information about Mammy, who is my favorite character and if you think it’s racist to have Mammy as your favorite character all I can tell you is that Mammy is also the favorite character of Jamaica Kincaid. Kincaid wrote “If Mammies Ruled The World” for the Village Voice in 1975. She calls Scarlett “a petulant bitch” and Rhett “a dashing chump.” And says that the problem with the story is that the white characters don’t deserve the black ones, especially Mammy. Too true.
