Viola Davis Takes It All Off
I want to make sure that you saw the ending of last week’s episode of the new hit TV series “How To Get Away With Murder.” In it, Viola Davis’s character, Annalise Keating (known to her husband as Ann Keating, which, eerily, is the maiden name of my mother!), removed her wig, took off her fake eyelashes, wiped her face clean of makeup, and asked her on-screen husband, “Why is your penis on a dead girl’s phone?†Rex Okpodu, LW’s Oscar savant, told me: “That certainly was an iconic moment in the history of US television. I can’t begin to talk about the psycho-sociology here: for a black woman to challenge the notion of what normal beauty is.” Being an Oscar obsessive, Rex had to reference last year’s winner for best supporting actress, Lupita N’yongo, saying that wigless Viola looked like Lupita did in “12 Years A Slave”: “bare and childlike without all the armour.”
