Television: Friday brings Eric Owens in the San Francisco Opera’s “Porgy and Bess.” Sunday brings a new “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver, whose news satire is more hard-hitting right now than Jon Stewart’s or Bill Maher’s. Music: Will Taylor Swift please go away? Not as long as she keeps delivering No. 1 singles. Sam Smith’s “In the Lonely Hour” is still my favorite soulful pop album of the year. Books: The strong sales for Cary Elwes memoir, “As You Wish,” are testament to the enduring popularity of “The Princess Bride.” Sports: Who needs the NFL? I’m still in Kansas City with the Royals. The Giants have replaced the Yankees as the Evil Empire. Finally: “Faith is the one thing that makes otherwise good people do bad things.” So writes E.O.
