Christmas News: Murray, Coppola, Menzel

Readers of LW know of my intense dislike of Christmas, especially its kitschy music. But many among you continue to practice the commercialism and Christianity of the season, so here’s the latest for you: Bill Murray is to reunite with his “Lost in Translation” director Sofia Coppola for a carol-singing Christmas TV special. Don’t expect Steve & Edie yelling “Sleigh ride! Sleigh ride!” Murray has rarely needed much encouragement to pick up a microphone. (He sings Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From the Storm” in his most recent film, “St Vincent.”) In other holiday tidings, Idina Menzel — you know, the Broadway belter whose career achieved warp speed at this year’s Oscars when John Travolta dubbed her Adele Dazeem — has just releasedHoliday Wishes.” It contains the usual chestnuts. While I won’t be roasting them on my iPod, I do wish Idina all the best: she used to live in my apartment building, and would come over for a cup of sugar from time to time.
