Spectacular Art Is Going Online

This week, 15 new American partners from across the country have launched exhibitions on the Google Cultural Institute. These collections represent a patchwork of diverse institutions encompassing a rich display of fine art, history and cultural heritage—from the Detroit Institute of the Arts‘ outstanding, encyclopedic art exhibition to the Pueblo Grande Museum’s 1,500-year-old archaeological site in Phoenix. Locations outside the U.S. are also represented. For example: In 1964, Marc Chagall completed a remarkable painting (pictured), in Paris’s Palais Garnier, depicting scenes from operas by composers ranging from Modest Mussorgsky to Mozart. Unfortunately for art lovers, the painting was difficult to see, installed on the ceiling almost 60 feet above the floor.
