Scottish Vote Splits Celebrities

On Thursday, residents of Scotland will go to the ballot box to vote on independence. (Mel Gibson won’t be voting, but he didn’t play Scottish hero William Wallace in “Braveheart.) A “yes” vote would split Scotland from the United Kingdom, end more than 300 years of union with England and give birth to Europe’s newest nation. With polls indicating a neck-and-neck vote, the issue of Scottish independence has spilt the unity of British celebrities. Major names on both sides of the border have come out for or against the union. In the Aye camp are Sean Connery, Gerard Butler, and Alan Cabaret Cumming. Against are Ewan MacGregor, Rod Stewart, and plenty of non-Scottish Brits like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Judi Dench. I’m in the Aye camp but don’t tell anybody. And if Scotland breaks away, can we be heartened in hoping that Texas may be next?
